"today in the bay's" christie smith is on the phone right now heading to the scene. what do you know so far? >> reporter: very strange circumstances this morning. a body wrapped in a blanket inside of a car right near sonoma state university. a lieutenant with the sheriff's department is quoting as saying the condition and location of the body is clearly suspicious. the person has not been identified yet and it is unclear at this point exactly how they died. it started with a traffic stop late monday evening. a deputy stopped to check a car because it was in a no parking so zone on petaluma road. the deputy saw evidence in the car that possibly tied it to a crime. the deputy looked further and found the trunk was unlocked and there was a body inside wrapped in a blanket.

still many questions this morning. i do have calls into the sheriff's department and the coroner's office. as soon as i hear from them i'll let you know what they have to say. that's what we have reporting live in santa rosa, i'm christie smith. back to you guys. we are also following breaking news out of crockett this morning where fire crews are on the scene of a fire near the carquinez bridge. it's an abandoned house burning. it's said to be at least 100 years old and firefighters are fighting it from the outside. we have a crew heading to the scene there. we have more information and video as soon as with he get it. a woman facing charges in the death of a millionaire will be in court this afternoon. raven dixon one of four people accused in the murder of ravi kumra inside of his home. the 22 year old from alameda being charged with prostitution, furnishing a controlled substance and being an accessory after the fact in kumra's death. prosecutors have not revealed how she is connected to the

other three suspects who are all being charged with murder. her attorney says she intends to plead not guilty. new details this morning into the investigation of the oil tanker that sideswiped the bay bridge last week. investigators tell nbc bay area news group the pilot guy kleess made a direction change. he tried to turn the tanker to go through a different opening causing him to hit one of those towers. it's not clear why he made that last-minute change. this month four contra costa county firestations are scheduled to shut down in a cost saving mood and leaders reach out to the community to help try to clear the air. homeowners from lafayette will get a chance to voice concerns to the fire chief and other leaders over the closure of firestation 16. the meeting starts tonight at 6:30 at the lafayette veterans

memorial building. another slate of meetings are scheduled for next week in walnut creek and in clayton. facebook has a secret but not for long. later on this morning the social media giant holding a major press conference at its headquarters in menlo park to reveal the latest and what it hopes is the greatest idea. marla tellez is live in menlo park. any idea what may be coming our way? >> reporter: jon, good morning. there are several ideas being tossed around but at this point it's all speculation. one thing is almost certain and that is it is not going to be a facebook phone. ceo mark zuckerberg enough to know the phone market should be left to apple and competitors. apple finding out it can be tough to sell phones. if it's not a phone, tech experts say it could be interesting new ways to advertise on facebook in the mobile realm. the company has been working on advancing and improving its ad business including video ads and

ad network so we could see something there but more experts believe the big announcement will be search related including our scott budman, one of our business and tech reporters. he says it's likely going to be something to give google a run for its money. >> facebook wants to get a bigger chunk of the search pie and maybe by coming up with a new product that's more efficient advertisers can target you more efficient. >> reporter: now i spoke to our scott mcgrew. he tells me he agrees it's expected to be something search related. internal changes to your facebook page to make searching a lot easier. whatever it is, we'll know the big secret in less than five hours. facebook making the announcement at 10:00 this morning and we'll have a crew here. live in menlo park, marla tellez, "today in the bay." a cold night for residents in a neighborhood after 150-foot redwood tree fell across the street and on a house. take a look at it. it took crews hours to clear that giant redwood last night.

when it fell, it took power lines out with it leaving about 30 homes in the dark and in the cold. some people had to just stay with family it was so cold out there. others had to set up fires in fireplaces using candlelight going old school to light the house there. they were lucky the tree didn't crash through their house. >> i could hear the tree starting to fall. i thought it was more than one tree possibly. >> devastated i don't have internet for eight hours. >> you pretty young thing. and root rot and root restriction from concrete made the tree's root system weak. pg&e hopes hour will be restored by 7:00 a.m. i don't know how many years i went without the internet. >> luckily nobody got hurt but thank god we were able to get that back soon. 5:06. meteorologist christina loren is here now to tell us about how cold outside it is. when will we warm up? >> later on today as a matter of fact we'll be much warmer. i did want to point out that

potentially the weather had something to do with that downed tree. prolonged hours below freezing can weaken the root systems. we don't know if that's the case but it probably played a contribution to that downed tree. this morning temperatures are very chilly yet again. we're at 33 degrees this morning in san jose. 29 in livermore. and you're at 30 degrees this morning in concord. as we head throughout the day, winds relaxed. we'll see colder temperatures in some cities especially the east bay where we had that wind to keep us more mild yesterday. so highs will be warmer. comfortable in fact. above average in san jose. 57 in fremont. 56 degrees on track with your seasonal average today in san francisco. we get into tomorrow and deeper into the upcoming weekend, temperatures are going to approach that 70-degree mark. it's going to be perfect for hitting the beach in late january only in california. that's coming up in my next report. seven-day outlook is ready to go. if you are ready to go out the front door, mike is here to help. >> easy drive across the bay

bridge. no backup at the toll plaza. that's good news. smooth flow of traffic down the east shore freeway more good news. here's a map of the maze and approach. green means at the limit. yellow means speeds are coming down around 60, 59. it's because they choose to drive that speed and not because there's a lot of traffic. easy flow across the carquinez bridge. a structure fire near the carquinez bridge. there's traffic control right there at the pier where it does look like where the fire is. my concern is that it is visible from the carquinez bridge traffic and traveling east 80 into the north bay. i see from time to time some slowing as you come around the bend right there and heading up toward the bridge itself. that may be an issue because i believe the flames may be visible from the area just continue about your way. the fire crews are there. they are taking care of things so we're tracking it for you. meanwhile, live look outside shows you the south bay for san jose, easy light flow here at 101 and 680. wider view coming up. back to you.

welcome back. 5:11 right now. more problems for boeing's 787 dreamliner days after the u.s. started a review of that aircraft japan now says it is launching an investigation today. the country looking into two recent fuel leaks on one of the new boeing aircraft operated by japan airlines. other recent problems on

dreamliners include a battery fire, a wiring problem and computer glitch and a cracked cockpit window. the dreamliner was built to revolutionize commercial aviation with new technology that cuts fuel costs by a fifth. 5:12. san francisco supervisors taking the first step today in renaming sfo to honor slain gay rights leader harvey milk. bob redell is live at the airport this morning with more details on this proposal. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. san francisco international might soon read harvey milk international making sfo the first airport in the world to be named after an openly gay person. later today san francisco supervisor david compost will propose legislation to rename the airport after milk. milk himself was an sf supervisor and leader in the gay rights movement and was assassinated inside city hall in 1978. putting milk's name on the

airport would be a milestone because sfo serves 68 countries where it is illegal to be homosexual. the name change would in his words give young gay people the greenlight to autenti entifty. governor jerry brown today announcing a new program at san jose state to help freshman become better freshman. online classes for students before they get to campus. >> we talked about online college courses in the past. this is different. these are classes not for fun but to address a huge problem at california public schools. our graduating high school students are not ready for college. "the new york times" says a portion of students coming out of the area high schools are so poorly prepared for college they need remedial classes right away. governor brown asked the college course company to come up with online lesson plans for those

students that will taught by professor to a small number of incoming freshman, community college students and high schoolers. eventually the program will be expanded to include lots of other courses and done in such a way that it helps lower the cost of college. some professors are uneasy with the idea of outsiders participating in college. facebook has an announcement this morning. the debt ceiling continues to weigh on markets. for that and news before the bell we'll turn to seema mody live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, seema. >> very good morning to you. let's look at futures. lower right now after a mixed session on monday. apple weighing on tech sector on reports that it is cutting component costs. dell took other pc makers higher on a ride higher on word it is in talks with several private equity firms. we get a trio of federal reserve officials speaking out on the economy. dow rising 18 points in yesterday's trade and nasdaq

slipping by eight. in other news, middle class is tightening their belts. among those making between 50 and $100,000 a year spending declined during the holiday season. that comes amid a lackluster outlook in the job market. the magazine says the most troubles for consumers include not being able to afford medical bills or medications or a reduction in health care coverage and missing a payment on a major bill not including a mortgage. consumer reports say americans will be confronted with a smaller paycheck this month. that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you much. paypal expanding. you can use it to buy the orange dream machine at jamba juice. you will be able to order a dream machine ahead of time on your iphone. not sure what we're seeing here. i don't know. so any way you'll be able to pay with it by paypal and walk into

keeping you more mild 24 hours ago not so much the case any longer. you have fallen into upper 20s. 26 degrees now in gilroy. about as cold there. temperatures are cold enough to warrant some frost, however. we're not expecting much. a really dry atmosphere and high pressure will take control later on today bringing about a nice rebound to your daytime highs. temperatures climbing about to average or a little above so in some cases. 58 in santa cruz. excited about 58 degrees but it sure feels better than 48 degrees in full sunshine. that will be the case for today. lots of sun headed our way. want to walk you through your seven-day forecast. we do have changes. one more morning of frosty conditions. and it's not going to be as cold tomorrow because of the warmer day ahead. thursday into friday the 60s. mid 60s return saturday into sunday. the upper 60s. and then monday into tuesday, gets tricky. monday it looks like rain will start to move along the pacific coast headed down south toward the bay area from the pacific northwest. for us i don't think we'll see

much activity if it doesn't arrive on time by tuesday we could hit 72, 73 degrees. however, if it does move in, it's going to keep your temperatures down and maybe bring us showers. that's what we're watching for right now. we let's check on the drive. good morning, mike. >> here the south bay shaking out well. just your road crew here south 880 approaching baskum. not a major concern. there's slowing as you should for cone zone. highway 85 approaching 101 from evelyn to that freeway you do have construction zone there as well. overnight road crews. we have north 880 heading up toward fremont at thorton. earlier crash. chp cleared that from the report. no slowing there. no problem here in this yellow you see popping up. you are still looking at an easy drive in commute and noncommute. over toward the tri-valley, smooth flow of traffic.

look at that. no slowing at the outer reaches as you come off the merge with 205 and 580 into altamont pass. that's the beginning of the morning commute for this traffic tuesday. live look outside shows you how things shake out for this view right here. peninsula north 101 toward university. a smooth flow of traffic past university. all of the way through san mateo and into the city. peninsula looking clear. we'll get another shot farther north for 101. this is southbound commute that we're worried about. no concerns. you're at the limit from novato through san rafael to and across the bridge and over on the east bay. top of your screen smooth drive west 80 to the bridge itself. also at the limit from carquinez bridge to the maze. back to you. 5:19 right now. a longtime coming. san jose sharks back in action. if you can't wait any longer, you should head over to the north rink at shark ice. you can check out the team at practice starting at noon.

officers rushed to a yellow cab just minutes before it struck and pinned a teenager underneath. look at that. the group of people they were able to actually lift the car just enough for the victim to be pulled away. he is in critical condition but doctors expect him to survive and a taxi driver was not charged. >> real life heros there jumping into action. great to see. hopefully the person does okay. 5:23 right now. let's check in with christina loren to find out some sun coming today. some warmth. >> lots of sun. the warmth will come along with that. you'll notice the difference. we've been in upper 40s and low 50s sunday and monday. today the mid to upper 50s return. we have to get through the cold start first. 33 in sunnyvale. i'll let you know how warm it's going to get in your city coming up in just a few minutes. if you like the warmer weather, if you have been meaning to get outdoors but it's been too cold, you'll appreciate what we have to offer you on your seven-day forecast. that's coming up. let's check your drive with

mike. >> thanks a lot. we're looking over here to the san mateo bridge where i want you to look at the taillights. we just got a burst of traffic. my speed sensors aren't showing dramatic slowing through the area. this is a good amount of cars headed there just about 5:20 this morning. we'll continue to see the flow over to the peninsula. san mateo bridge is clear. a good flow of traffic coming off 880. there's the nimitz freeway itself northbound with taillights. between 980 and 23rd you have your overnight road crews and there may be slowing as you approach the southbound side. they should pick up over the next few minutes without any major drama just getting the start to increase here. another live look here shows you south bay with 101. smooth drive northbound picking up a number of cars approaching that first burst in the next ten minutes or so coming through san jose. we'll see how that shakes out. we talked about with laura earlier we have seen a change. the first few weeks of january. after vacation and before the martin luther king holiday a lot

we have the bay bridge upper deck where i just got reports from chp. sounds like a crash heading toward treasure island. we'll bring you the latest as they arrive on scene coming up. help you wake up this morning with a live look outside from the south bay waiting for the sun's arrival on this tuesday, january 15th. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for joining us. it's 5:29. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. today that rumor mill in full effect swirling all around facebook. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is following the story this morning. a big-time announcement coming today. you always have the insight. what can we expect? >> let me start with two ideas. one crazy and one not. what we don't think is going to happen is there's going to be some kind of facebook phone. that is what we don't expect. that's been a crazy talk that's been going on for some time. what we also don't expect is the

kind of wish for is some sort of discussion of mobile ads with facebook. facebook desperately needs to improve its mobile ads as people move away from the pc and onto the iphone and that kind of thing. i presented you with what it probably isn't and what we wish it was but marla tellez is over at facebook headquarters with what it most likely is. good morning, marla. >> reporter: scott, good morning. what it likely is something search related perhaps some internal changes to your facebook page. that will certainly make searching for people and places much easier. both zuckerberg and ceo sheryl sandburg have talked about potential of search within facebook. you never know. we could see ways to use a facebook network to get targeted search results across the web. if facebook launches a social search engine it would create $5 billion in annual revenues.

facebook announced that it has a big secret to reveal and it's seen a rise in shares starting the week at a six-month high. we'll see how it starts on this tuesday when the markets open at 6:30 this morning. i wanted to point something out to you. you take a look. their logo in front of their headquarters in front of menlo park. remember it was the like symbol. thumbs up. it's now more of a pointer heading in the dumbarton bridge direction. i don't know what this is. a hint of things to come? we'll have to wait and see when facebook makes the big announ announcement at 10:00 this morning. >> sign language. all right. facebook as she mentioned climbing steadily closing monday afternoon a little under $30 a share. one of the really curious things that is going on here is facebook reports its profits after the closing bell at the end of the month here. we normally do not see companies making big news just ahead of their reports.

traditionally, jon and laura, they avoid this. today they are not doing so. we'll know much more at 10:00. we'll have a report for you at 11:00. back to you. >> scott, thank you very much. we're following developing news out of roanoke park this morning where sheriff's detectives found a body inside the trunk of a car that was park eed illegally nea sonoma state university. christie smith is live with new details for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. one lieutenant calls the discovery and location of this body suspicious. it certainly sounds that way. a body found wrapped in a blanket near sonoma state university and it was shoved into the trunk of a car. this started around 6:30 last night. a deputy stopped to check it out because the car was in a no parking zone on petaluma hill road. that deputy checked the license plate and tied it to a possible crime that had been committed earlier in santa rosa. investigators aren't saying what

that crime was. they say that it did happen on friday. then deputies looked closer and saw evidence in that car and they linked it to that crime and then big surprise. they took another look and found that the trunk was unlocked inside a body wrapped in a blanket. investigators aren't saying how this person died. they haven't identified this person. i do have calls into the sheriff's department as well as the coroner's office and as soon as i hear from them, i'll let you know what they had to say. reporting live in santa rosa, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. the search is on for a gunman who shot and killed a man not far from the east palo alto police station. the shooting happened monday afternoon. the gunshot detection system alerted police to the crime where officers found a 24 year old behind a home on illinois street. he had been shot multiple times. police say a second victim turned up at stanford medical

center with gunshot wounds. at last check he was in critical condition. lawsuits brought by victims of the san bruno pipeline explosion against pg&e may no longer be going to trial. during a hearing in san mateo court yesterday, lawyers say they have come up with a plan to settle remaining lawsuits over the next three months. more than 320 san bruno residents still have active suits against pg&e for its role in the september 2010 explosion that ultimately killed eight people and destroyed an entire neighborhood. some 120 other people have already received settlements. another cool start to our morning. let's see what's in store. >> cool is right. cold. >> you may not know this but it's national hat day. today is a fantastic day to put a hat on to keep warm. beanie, cowboy hat, anything will do trapping warmth wherever you can. 29 in livermore. 33 in san jose. 26 in gilroy. by noon today, we'll hit our highs from yesterday. it's going to be about as warm as it was in the heat of the day yesterday as you break for

lunch. we'll round out the day about five to six degrees warmer in some cities than yesterday afternoon. 57 in san jose. we'll take it. 57 in fremont. 56 in san francisco. you want the 60s. how about the 70s? we've got that on your seven-day forecast in our next report. look at your drive. pretty busy for a tuesday, mike. >> it is tuesday. it's traffic tuesday. it is very busy on the upper deck of the bay bridge we're concerned because of volume starting to kick in now as the morning commute gets really started in earnest. we see the red lights. the taillights heading over toward treasure island from the toll plaza moving smoothly but a report in chp blogger got more detail. three vehicles involved blocking slow lane as they head over toward treasure island onramp. we didn't see any problem on the incline and here the toll plaza itself we see a typical build as folks start to slow down near the cash lanes but no slowing -- you don't have to stop for fastrak. map shows you general area approaching the maze. we're still good with green

welcome back, everyone. a good tuesday morning to you. lit up by the port of oakland. changes in the forecast. we'll check them with meteorologist christina loren. it is 5:39. a connecticut town now honoring a young teacher killed shielding her students in the newtown shooting massacre. the city council voting last night to name a new school building after victoria soto. her family says the honor will keep victoria's name alive forever. she was one of six staff members killed. soto grew up and went to high

school in stratford. the movie theater in aurora, colorado, where a gunman opened fire is set to reopen this weekend. survivors of the shooting and victims' family members will get a chance to tour that theater if they so choose before it opens thursday. the theater has undergone extensive renovations since the shooting rampage back in july. it will also be renamed century aurora. it's an evening of remembrance. congress taking care of some unfinished business on capitol hill this morning as another budget fight looms on the horizon and today lawmakers set to address funding for hurricane sandy victims. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill with more on that and the eternal tug of war over the debt ceiling. good morning. >> seems eternal at this point. that's the big issue here. they have to deal with that unfinished business first when

it comes to superstorm sandy. $50 billion up to a vote today in immediate and long-term funding for those victims up and down the east coast. while there's some republican objection to spending this money without balancing that with some cuts somewhere, it looks like it will probably pass. speaking of cuts, we've got more spending cuts coming up march 1st if congress doesn't figure out what to do about the budget and the debt ceiling so we can borrow more money to pay off what we committed to spend. president obama says those are two separate issues. borrowing more and spending cuts. republicans disagree. the president says you can't use one as a bargaining chip for the other. it may delay social security and veterans benefits checks but republicans insist these issues are linked. we'll see how that debate continues to play out as the president gets ready to release his report on what he can do about gun control without congress. vice president biden came up

with 19 different areas where he says the president can act without getting the lawmakers here on capitol hill involved. >> another busy day out there. they keep you on the move. thank you very much. secretary of state hillary clinton will testify before congress about the terrorist attack in libya that killed four americans. clinton will appear before the house foreign affairs committee next wednesday. she was scheduled to test last month but she suffered that concussion and later hospitalized with a blood clot. she is expected to face tough questions from lawmakers about the september 11th attack in benghazi that killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. big changes could soon be on the way to san francisco international airport. this morning supervisors will introduce a proposal to rename the airport in honor of slain gay rights pioneer harvey milk. you, laura. what will happen later today is a proposal of legislation that will have to get colleagues to go along with it. the idea is to rename sfo after harvey milk. of course harvey milk was a san francisco supervisor himself. a leader in the gay rights movement. he was assassinated inside city hall in 1978. putting milk's name on the airport would be a milestone because his nephew is pointing out sfo serves 68 countries where it's illegal to be homosexu homosexual. the name change would give young gay people the greenlight to authenticity. >> it would make the airport the first to be named after someone who is openly gay. >> hopefully it's more than just being openly gay. it's what he did because you can have openly straight people. it's looking at more than just that. >> i don't know. i prefer sfo just because it's,

we've had multiple days. three consecutive days in the 30s and that's the case throughout the day. by tomorrow probably warming you up into the 40s for your lows. only in the city we'll see another cold start. our afternoon highs will rebound nicely. want to point out north bay, east bay and south bay interior valleys are coldest this morning where you want to travel cautiously over bridges and overpasses that freeze first. as we head throughout the day, high pressure will take over. this means for us a warming pattern that continues all of the way into the weekend. potentially into next week but there's a storm system i'm keeping my eye on in the eastern pacific. plenty of sunshine for today. highs at average for this time of year for mid january. we get the warmup starting tomorrow climbing above seasonal averages. 57 degrees today in san jose. 56 for gilroy. 58 degrees in santa cruz. not too bad. as we get through wednesday into thursday, temperatures continue to climb. we'll be in mid 60s to finish the week. look at saturday.

68 degrees. and that's your inland average. what i can tell you is some outlying cities like gilroy will hit 70 and then it gets interesting as we head through monday into tuesday and even wednesday of next week. looks like a storm system will try to move onshore. if it does not, we'll keep on climbing in temperature. i think it will bring us a stray shower or two to the north bay. we'll continue to update you on that situation as we get more information into the weather department. right now i'm tracking models like crazy. let's check your drive with mike. >> before i was married i tracked models like crazy too. looking over here to the south bay, we are looking at slowing right now. traffic sensors 101 and 87 showing slowdown sticking around for a few minutes. it's beginning of the commute for south bay and a traffic tuesday so that quite possibly could stick around for the morning commute. road crews will clear soon south 880 clearing by 7:00. another hour's work going on there. north 85 toward 101 up to highway 101 you should see road crews getting on the move in the next few minutes.

we don't see any slowing through the area. use caution. live look outside showing you palo alto 101 along the peninsula nohbound with taillights past willow and continuing up to san mateo. a smooth drive into the city and out of the city equal flow of traffic and equal speeds on the southbound side. coming off that san mateo bridge approaching 101, this is 92 westbound commute direction. a good flow of traffic. volume building now coming off 880 but still know slowing aside from the approach to the toll plaza for the san mateo bridge and 880 itself moves smoothly. we'll show you the carquinez bridge. laura told you about the fire. the traffic flow across the bridge in 680 moving smoothly. firefighters fighting a fire at jackson where there's local traffic control. you saw the pictures. it's on a pier over the water. it may still be visible for some folks as you approach or passing the carquinez bridge. we're watching.

they got a lot of pressure from the parent company over who should or should not get this award. >> it was for the best gadget. we previously reported they chose a device by the dish network called the hopper. the problem is that cbs is suing dish over that very same device. cbs told cnet to pull dish out of the awards. the website says that decision went all of the way up to the upper management of cbs. on monday a longtime reporter for cnet resigned over the protest. his boss who had to carry out cbs's orders said in a statement "i could have quit right then. maybe i should have. i decided that the best thing was for my team was to get through the day as best we could and to fight the fight from the other side." we should point out nbc is also involved in the lawsuit over the hopper device along with every major tv network. the device records television
